Powergroup Lunch with England's 1966 World Cup Legends

With the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa looming and anticipation for a strong performance from England's 'Golden Generation' at an all time high, Powergroup were proud to attend this year's IoD Winter Sporting Lunch. A fine mix of Powergroup customers and staff were treated to a three course lunch in the presence of England's 1966 World Cup legends: Gordon Banks, Jack Charlton, George Cohen, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Nobby Stiles.

After lunch and drinks Powergroup customers and staff enjoyed incisive discussion from Gordon Banks regarding Fabio Capello's goal keeping dilemma. Honoree Irishman, 'Big' Jack Charlton provided a typically witty response to the Thierry Henry - handball incident (his final remarks are not suitable for publication).

Memories from the 1966 World Cup Final were vividly brought to life by Nobby Stiles, especially his tales of Argentinean captain Antonio Rattin. Nobby proved to be as much an England icon today as he was back in 1966. West Ham and England legends Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters discussed the current England squad's striking options before re-kindling all the goals from the 1966 Wembley final.

While football was foremost in everybody's mind, approx £7,500 was raised on the day for the Bobby Moore Fund. Bobby's teammate George Cohen was on hand to recount his world cup memories and also to re-iterate the good work made by the fund. Having survived bowel cancer first hand, George was able to express how vital it is that everyone gets even the slightest twinge checked by a doctor as soon as possible. England captain in 1966, Bobby Moore died from bowel cancer in 1993, aged only 51.

A few football-mad staffers were able to get close to Jack Charlton before the days proceedings were over, and it is safe to say a good time was had by all. With minds full of 1966, South Africa and what might be, everyone made their way home across rush-hour London after a great day out.
